Brown Wins Indoor 3000 Metres Title

Club athletes continued the new year with good performances once again in a diverse range of events and venues at the weekend.

Dominic Brown, who studies medicine at Sheffield University, won the North of England Indoor 3000 metres title at Sheffield. Brown picked up the pace over the second half to win in 8.19.49, finishing a second or two ahead of the other medal winners. Brown is one of a number of Tonbridge athletes who hope to compete at the British Indoor Championships in February.

Club athletes also picked up three more indoor medals at the South of England age group Championships held at Lee Valley across the weekend. Ben Nolan had his first ever competition at 60 metres indoors, winning the silver medal, in the under 15 age group. He ran 7.42 in his heat, before improving to 7.39 in the semi-final and again to 7.37 in the final, which was just one hundredth of a second away from the club age group record.

The two other medals came in the under 17 women's High Jump, where both Rebekah O'Brien and Samantha Stubbs cleared 1.65 metres to take the silver and bronze medals, respectively. The winner cleared 1.70 metres.

Nicole Taylor and Corey De'Ath were both selected to compete for an England squad to race in the international cross country meeting, at Elgoiba, Northern Spain, on Sunday. Taylor finished 13th in her race, being the third English team member home, whilst the race was won by Hellen Obiri, of Kenya, the Olympic 5000 metres silver medallist.

De'Ath was 31st in the men's race, which was also won by one of the world's top distance runners, Rhonex Kipruto, of Kenya.

Ben Cole won the Rough 'n' Tumble multi terrain 10 mile race near Swindon on Sunday in 61.16, breaking his own course record, set when winning the event last year.
