Club Ladies to the Fore in Local Events

The Club’s female distance runners put in some very strong performances on Sunday, at both the Paddock Wood Half Marathon and the Sevenoaks 10k in Knole Park.

The pleasantly mild and damp weather created ideal conditions for long distance running and there were a host of fast times at Paddock Wood and more than two thousand finishers.

Tonbridge ladies filled the first three positions, with Lucy Reid (76.17), Nicole Taylor (77.16) and Maria Heslop (79.21) all recording personal bests. Heslop was the first veterans lady home and in the process recorded the second fastest time ever by a British over 50 age group, female.

It was Nicole Taylor who had pushed the pace in the early stages, tracked by team mate Reid, with the latter pulling away over the final four miles. Their times are the second and third fastest ever by Tonbridge women, behind the 76.00 from Miranda Heathcote, back in 1998.

Julian Rendall broke his own Tonbridge men’s, over 40 age group record, as he finished 20th overall in 72.13, whilst Dan Watt recorded 73.09. John Gilbert from Kent AC won the race in 65.18, having a three minute advantage over the second placed runner.

Also on Sunday around five hundred competitors took part in the Sevenoaks Rotary 10k, held in Knole Park. Once again it was a Tonbridge AC ladies team that were to the fore, on this hilly, multi terrain course. Tina Oldershaw (41.26) and Polly Pitcairn-Knowles (44.54) filled the first two positions, whilst Lucy Thompson was 5th in 47.16.

This weekend Tonbridge have teams due to compete at the National Road Relay Championships, at Sutton Coldfield and the club hosts the first Southern Athletics League meeting of the season, at Tonbridge School.
