Bannister Wins Boxing Day Handicap
The Club hosted our Boxing Day handicap race on Monday, at Tonbridge School and attracted over a hundred members, plus friends and family, to the event.
This year’s event was organised by Steve Keywood for the first time, who had scrutinised current form, in order to set runners off at appropriate intervals. Competitors then set off, handicapped by starting time, up to a maximum of almost nine minutes, over the five kilometre run.
At the finish it was new club member Peter Bannister who was first home, as he ran 18.47, with a four-minute handicap, to win from Alex Hookway (19.01), who had started alongside him. Bannister has converted from national class canoeing and his recent training has seen his five kilometre time drop by around two minutes.
George Duggan was closing fast at the finish and ran the fastest split of the race with 15.22, to finish third and fifteen seconds behind Bannister. Corey De’Ath was second fastest with 15.36. Katie Goodge was the fastest female with 19.51, not far ahead of Megan Brickell’s 20.01.
The Kent County Cross Country Championships are next on the agenda for many of the Club’s runners and these take place at Brands Hatch on Saturday 7th January 2017.
