Tonbridge Veterans Win Three County Team Medals
The Club had good representation at the Kent Veterans Cross Country Championships, at Dartford, on Saturday. More than three hundred runners finished across the three races, which incorporated eight age group events.
The Club’s biggest success came in the first race, for the over 50 men’s age group, which comprised a four lap course of nine kilometres. Ben Reynolds and Graeme Saker led the charge with Reynolds pulling away over the final third of the race to win in 31.11 from Saker. Phil Coleman in 13th completed the scoring team, to win from fourteen other clubs.
The Tonbridge over 35 ladies team won bronze medals through Sasha Houghton (9th), Antonia Skerritt (11th) and Nina Ridge (23rd), whilst the over 40 men also finished as third team, through Andrew Mercer (4th), Adam Styles (14th) and Tony Bennett (28th).
In the over 45 women’s race, Tracey Horne finished 10th and Anne Brenchley made a rare cross country appearance and won a sliver medal in the over 65s competition.
Also on Saturday Alex Howard and Miles Weatherseed represented Oxford University in the Varsity Cross Country match against Cambridge, where they finished 8th and 15th respectively.
Nathan Marsh had one of his best ever performances when he ran the second fastest leg of the day at the Leeds University relays. Marsh was representing Leeds, on their home course, but was only in the B team, that finished third in the overall race.
On Sunday there were fifty competitors in the junior one mile races, promoted by the club and held at Tonbridge School. Bella Kramer, from Tonbridge, was first girl home in 6.46, whilst the first boy was Alistair Shelley from Medway and Maidstone in 6.09. Isaac Arnott was the first Tonbridge boy home, in third, with 6.31. Ages ranged from six to twelve on this occasion and the next races will be on 15th January.
This coming weekend a number of the Tonbridge athletes will be representing the county in the South of England Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, at Oxford on Saturday 10th December.
