A Preliminary team sheet for both the Men and Women has been sent out by email and I have been adjusting it in response to a couple of queries and fitness issues.

All offers of help to assist with the Javelin duties that we will be officiating will be gratefully accepted.

European Masters Championships, Denmark

The 20th European Masters Athletics Championships Stadia were held in Aarhus, Denmark from 27th July to 6th August, 2017. There were 4,000 competitors from 44 nations. Competitors were aged from 35 to over 90 years and medals were awarded in five year age-groups. Athletes represented their nations in 10 days of competition in two Stadia, on the road and on the cross country course. All standard track and field events were held plus track and road walks and it all concluded with a mass participation Half Marathon with over 6,000 runners mixing with the EMACS competitors.

The full results are on Power of 10 and here: http://www.fidalservizi. it/risultati/2017/AArhus_2017/ Index.htm

Alan Newman (M60) and Sue James (W65) will join Tonbridge AC next month and here are their results and also results from Ben Reynolds (M50). The weather in Aarhus was awful with rain and strong winds every day. The organisation was generally relaxed and friendly in the typical Danish style.

Ben reports that he had a bit of a chaotic time and was not as prepared as he would have liked resulting in a below par performance in the 5K, however he had a plane to catch which meant he had to stop the half marathon at 9km and jump in a taxi to the airport so his result should not have been registered as it did not exist!!

29/07 Alan Newman M60 1500m - 18th, 5:46.4
30/07 Alan Newman M60 4km XC - 13th, 14:57
30/07 Sue James W65 4km XC - 8th, 19:26
02/08 Alan Newman M60 5000m - 19th, 20:17.64
02/08 Ben Reynolds M50 5000m - 9th, 16:30.58
05/08 Sue James W65 800m - 10th, 3:50.75
06/08 Sue James W65 4x400m Relay - 2nd, 5:30.23 (GB Team Silver)
06/08 Alan Newman M60 Half Marathon - 19th, 1:33:02 (GB 4th Team)
06/08 Ben Reynolds M50 Half Marathon - 54th, 1:58:34 (GB 9th Team)

Sue is third from left. W65 4x400m GB Masters Team - silver medals.

There were 1,188 British Masters competing in Denmark (second largest team to Germany with 2,921 athletes). Germany topped the medals table (407) with Britain (208) second and Finland (118) third. According to my maths that makes GB the most successful nation per head, with a medal strike rate of 17.5% to Germany's 13.9%!
Sue is third from left. W65 4x400m GB Masters Team - silver medals.

Next year there are three European and World Championship Masters events in Spain: European Masters Indoors in Madrid (19-24 March); European Masters Non-Stadia in Alicante (18-20 May) and World Masters Stadia Championships in Malaga (4-16 September). Alan and Sue are planning to compete in all three and further details will be provided in a future news item, should you wish to join them. The Alicante event looks perfect for a long weekend trip with a 10k, Half Marathon, XC Relay and Race Walks on the programme.

South of England Road Relays at Crystal Palace Sept

These are taking place on our doorstep, so perhaps we can have at least one (probably 2 M40) M40 and M50 teams.  It will be tough to defend our M50 team title however I think we can be stronger than last year.   We can have more than one team of 4 in any age group.   The Women only have one age group of W40, but again can have more than one team.

This takes place on the same day and at the same venue as the junior races, so there will be a big race atmosphere.
Teams are 4 x 6km for Men and 4 x 4km for women

A team of Julian Rendall, Simon Fraser, Dan Madams and Tony Bennett for example would be very competitive in the M40 AG!

Southerner Magazine

This is the round up of SCVAC vets activities and this week we have Julian Rendall on the front cover as he was 3rd overall and first Vet runner at the North Downs 30k.

Kent Grand Prix

Alan Newman has brought this event to my attention that we may like to take part in. Have a look at the events (varying distances) and the AG categories.
