Masters Update - 3rd March 2017

National Championships at Nottingham

Big news of the week is clearly the amazing achievement of the TAC mens senior team that won the National championships at Nottingham. I am sure that all of us vets who were able to run there have a little feeling that they were part of that team, even if most of us were still struggling through the bogs long after the result had been announced. For me when looking back at the footage I took on my gopro at the start it makes me realise how lucky we are in this sport to be able to line up with the top athletes and in our case the winners!!!!

Men

Simon Fraser (502) led the over 40’s home after he took up the challenge of starting faster, but announced after “never again”. Graeme Saker (527) showed perseverance on a course that he was not sure about, but was the 1st M55 to finish - no mean feat! Adam Styles (597) again showed continued good form as he has improved throughout the XC season.

There was then a prolonged gap of 341 places to the “Division 2 Vets” all of whom were achieving targets. Ian Crawley had set off very fast with his intention to beat Duncan Ralph. 33 seconds and 20 places was all that separated them at the end, so I suspect the finish came just in time for Ian.

For those who missed the race the highlights are on the TAC distance runners site or MPK’s view of the race is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCzG1bRN8Nc&t=248s

Team 1st  of 131 (6 to score), ? team of ? (9 to score). Number of finishers = 1762.  Winner ran 39.35

Our first 6 vets to finish would have been 78th team out of 131 completed teams!

Women

Lucy was one who benefitted from setting off faster than usual and achieved her highest finish ever. Cathy has had quite a year and all those who were at the dinner will have had their tear ducts flushed listening to her receive her well deserved award.

Maria Heslop raced for the last time as Paddock Wood and is now first claim TAC. She was an impressive 128th.

Team 5th of 93. Number of finishers = 788. Winner ran 29.07

Bromley Vets 5 mile XC Sparrows Den Sunday 12th March 10.30am

I (MPK) have entered this race that takes place on familiar ground at Sparrows Den, West Wickham. It is a 2 lap course that utilizes land to the west not normally part of the Kent league course. I think it is solely for Vets.
